You’re living it up in Big Sur. All this hiking, beach-going and general exploring has made you hungry.

You want to eat somewhere funSomewhere with views. Maybe you’d also like some coffee that actually tastes good, while we’re at it?

Wow. You’re really quite demanding aren’t you??

Well don’t worry my friend –  we’ve got you covered.

Here are our top 3 places to eat in Big Sur.

1 – Nepenthe – best view

Open since 1949 this is a Big Sur institution with views to die for.

Head up to the rooftop area,  pull up a chair at the bench overlooking the ocean and order yourself The Famous Ambrosiaburger – a delicious steak sandwich, served on a french roll with their famous ambrosia sauce.

With bottles of ketchup on every table and happy staff rushing around distributing baskets of golden shoestring fries, this is a picture-perfect US road-trip pit-stop.

Miss A and I and that incredible view

You will find Nepenthes at 48510, Highway 1. This is right near the ‘Posts’ part of Big Sur.

Keep a look out for eagles on this stretch of coast. There’s plenty of them around and they are majestic.

2 – Big Sur Bakery – best coffee for miles (and miles…)

As a long black drinker, I can happily handle US filter coffee. No problem. I’ll take your caffeine!

It’s a different story, however, for my generally delightful although most definitely coffee-snob companions, and their demanding milk frothing preferences.

ENTER – Big Sur Bakery to save the day.

This is the place to come for a truly excellent coffee hit and some truly delicious baked goods.

You can also hit this place up at night, post hike, for a wood-fired pizza. Sounds like a pretty good day to me.

You’ll find Big Sur Bakery a little north of Nepenthes, at 47540 Highway 1.

3 – Oceanview Sushi Bar  – most fun dinner spot

Located at Treebones Resort, you’ll find a no-reservation tiny sushi bar perched up on the hill behind highway 1.

Here you’ll find amazingly fresh sashimi and sushi, along with a nice side of ocean views.

Your name will go on the wait-list when you arrive and you can sit in the main lodge of Treebones by the fire.

When there’s room, you’ll join the other diners perched up at the sushi bar. The staff will have a quick chat to you about what sort of sushi you like.

Sushi chef Sarah will then whip up your order, fresh in front of you. We enjoyed some incredible scallop sushi and a variety of sashimi. Hands down the best we’ve ever tried.

They blast a great playlist and there’s plenty of sake on offer. All the makings for a great night.

It’s quite unexpected to find such a cool little venue out in the Big Sur wilderness. A fantastic dinner option – not to be missed!

You’ll find Oceanview Sushi Bar at the very southern end of Big Sur, 71895 Highway 1. Keep in mind this is about 45 minutes drive south from what many consider to be the ‘main stretch’ of Big Sur.
